A 54-year-old construction worker in Massachusetts USA was pronounced dead after eating a bag and a half of black liquorice a day resulting in a fatal heart attack.
The man is said to change his candy type a few weeks before his sweet demise from red liquorice to black liquorice.
“We were told that the deceased was not getting a healthy balanced diet and that he ate a lot of liquorice. Would his attack have anything to do with the excessive intake of the candy”? Dr Elazer Edelman
The component in the candy that was said to kill him is called glycyrrhizic acid, an important condiment in liquorice that causes high blood pressure and ultimately a heart attack to its victim.
