Football association of Malawi (FAM) says everything is in place for the launch of the 2019 Airtel Top 8 Cup tomorrow at the Kamuzu Stadium with giants Be Forward Wanderers Football Club facing Silver Strikers Football Club in the kick off match of the competition.
FAM’s Competitions Manager Gomezgani Zakazaka speaking in an interview said they expect to have an exciting competition with other teams participating in the tournament for the first time.
“As FAM everything is in place for the launch of this year’s Airtel Top 8 Cup at the Kamuzu Stadium and together with the sponsors we expect to have a good and exciting tournament this year as some teams are participating in the tournament for the first time and that defending champions for the cup Blue Eagles Football Club didn’t qualify for the tournament and it’s up for grabs.
“Yes Nyasa Big Bullets Football Club is not participating this year as they are saving a ban but should not affect the competition in any way as the participating teams have supporters we are expecting to turn up in large numbers to support their teams “, Zakazaka said.
On their part, Be Forward Wanderers Football Club’s team manager Steve Madeira said they are ready to face the central Bankers in the launch match on Saturday and battle for a win as their is much pride at stake.
“We are ready to face Silver Strikers Football Club and we know that it will be a tough game considering that we lost to them in the finals of the very same Cup in 2017 and we defeated them last year in the finals of the FISD Challenge Cup a thing that will make them to come hard on us.
“The boys know the important of the game that we need to win playing at home before we face them in the second round away and they have a heart to bring the cup at the Lali Lubani as its the only cup missing in our trophy cabinet “, Madeira said.
In their response, Silver Strikers Football Club coach Lovemore Fazili said
“We are to face the game with a positive approach to win away in the first leg for us not to be under much pressure playing the second leg at our own back yard but we know it won’t be easy for us to register a win over Wanderers as they are also a good side”.
The 2019 Airtel Top 8 will be played without defending champions Blue Eagles Football Club who failed to finish in the top 8 of the TNM Super League last year and Nyasa Big Bullets who are saving a ban given by FAM after its supporters caused violence in the finals of the Cup last year at the Bingu National Stadium.
