Atletico Madrid stun European champions as Haland nets double against psg

There was a lot of action on Tuesday night when 16 of the champions league returned full of thrill and excitement.

European champions Liverpool were stunned by a Spanish opponent Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the round of 16 at the Estado Wanda Metropolitano as they continued their hunt for a win away against a Spanish club in the competition. Still fresh from their narrow 1-0 win against Norwich in the English Premier League (EPL) Liverpool coach Jurgen Kloop had the Senegalese Sadio Mane and the Egyptian Mohammed Salah in the starting line who failed to break the Spanish side defence the whole 90 minutes.

Atletico Madrid who were runners up of the competition in 2014 and 2016 scored the only goal of the match in the third minute through Saul Niguez on a night Madrid Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey marvelled as he watched.

In another first leg match played in Germany at the Signal Iduna Park, Borrusia Dortmund utilised home group advantage by defeating French league one champions Paris Saint-Germain (psg) 2-1 with both goals scored in a space of nine minutes in the second half.

Norwegian Erling Braunt Haland scored a brace for the German side while Neymar scored the consolation vital away goal for PSG before they play the second leg in France.
