Centre for Alternatives for Victimised Women and Children (CAVWOC) has said sports remains one of the best ways of fighting Gender Based Violence (GBV) in schools.

CAVWOC’s Field Officer for Phalombe, Rightwell Nyirenda made the remarks Sunday during the finals of the Organisation’s Primary Schools trophies held at Khongoloni Community Day Secondary School ground.

He observed that through the sports competition that have been running for the past two months, the organisation has managed to reach out to over 7, 000 school going youth with messages aimed at arresting GBV in schools and empower girls to stand against any form of violence.

“When we came to Phalombe particularly in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Jenala with the  project called a safe education, the levels of school based sexual violence were high and this was leading to high school drop outs among girls before reaching Standard 8,” Nyirenda said.

Primary Education Advisor for Khongoloni Zone, Abdul Gama commended CAVWOC for her efforts in combating GBV in schools which has led to the re-enrolment of many girls who dropped out of school due to sexual violence.

He said apart from offering entertainment, sporting activities were the best way of bringing many people together to propagate messages of GBV.

“Through the tourney, CAVWOC and the education sector have managed to attach learners from 16 schools to sporting activities that took place every weekend while also imparting messages necessary in ending GBV,” Gama pointed out.

Among other things, schools participating in the tournament were given jerseys inscribed with messages condemning sexual violence in schools.

CAVWOC has since 2016 been implementing the three-year project aimed at combating sexual GBV for girls and vulnerable learners in primary schools for them to be able to attain education.

During the finals of the K125, 000 competition, Dzanjo Primary School emerged champions after beating Minyanga 3-0 in football, while in netball Mileme Primary School defeated Bona by 5 baskets to 4 to become champions.
