Manchester City football club defeated Aston Villa 2-1 to be crowned champions of the 2019-20 Carabao cup in a match played on Sunday, 1 March at the Wembley stadium.
Manchester City led by coach Pep Guardiola did everything right in the afternoon to win the match and end doubts of what could have been a trophyless season. They trail by 22 points against English premier League (EPL) leaders Liverpool making it impossible for them to defend the league they won last year.
With winning the Carabao cup in their veins, the citizens were first to score in the match through Sergio Aguero just 20 minutes in the match before R.Hernandez doubled the lead ten minutes later. Tanzania international Mbwana Samatta reduced the damage for his side Aston Villa four minutes before half time with hopes for a possible comeback in the second half.
In the second half, Manchester city who had Algerian midfielder Riyad Mahrez on the bench tightened it’s defence and frustrated Aston Villa until full time to win their 7th Carabao cup and defend it for the 3rd successive year since 2017-18 season.
Villa which has five Carabao cup wins to their name had the Egyptian duo of Ahmed El Mohamady and Mahmoud Hassan as well as Zimbabwean Marvelous Nakamba in the starting team. Samatta made history for being the first African player to score in a Carabao cup final since 2013/14 season when Ivory coast international Yaya Toure scored for Manchester city when it faced Sunderland. He is also the 5th player from Africa to score in the Carabao cup finals following the likes of Didier Drogba from Ivory Coast.
