Political violence has reared its ugly face in the area of Senior Chief Ngabu in Chikwawa where one person is reportedly injured, Malawi News Agency (Mana) has established.

Reports also have it that Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate for Chikwawa Nkombezi Constituency Ben Khuleya, has been beaten up after a clash erupted between DPP and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) supporters.

Khuleya confirmed in an interview with Mana on Thursday that DPP youth supporters were preparing a venue for the presidential whistle stop rally when the MCP youth stormed and started beating them up.

MCP Regional Chairperson for the South, Peter Simbi asked for more time to cross-check the facts of the matter.

“Let me get back to you in a short while. I don’t have the fine details about it since I have just heard about the matter some few minutes ago,” Simbi said.

Chikwawa Police Station Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Foster Benjamin has since confirmed with Mana that some political violence has indeed occurred at Ngabu but declined to give further details.

President Peter Mutharika was scheduled to fulfill a number of engagements in Chikwawa and Nsanje districts at the time of going to press.
