Blue Eagles football club has asked their sponsors, Malawi Police Service if the teams can participate in this year’s continental showpiece of the Confederation of Africa (CAF) confederation cup.
The police headquarters side qualifies to take part in the confederations cup this year having won the FISD challenge cup in the 2019 season.
Eagles chairperson Alexander Ngwala said they have been in talks with their sponsors. They are yet to receive an answer for their wish but were told to submit their expected budget for the tournament.
“We have been in talks with our sponsors on our wish to participate in the CAF confederation cup this year. We have given an estimated budget of k40 million kwacha to take us through the preliminary round matches,” Ngwala said.
According to Ngwala the team will pay Football Association of Malawi (FAM) k15 million as surety with k12 million to be used in buying air tickets for the preliminary round away match. The other money will be for other expenses in the tournament.
Ngwala further said participating in CAF tournament will help to raise the standard of football in the country.
“By participating in CAF tournaments we expose our players to clubs from other countries and see how we play against teams from other leagues. That will help a lot to improve the standards of the game in the country,” he said.
