Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says plans are still there to host the 2020 Council of Southern African Football Association (COSAFA) under 17 tournament once the Malawi government gives an approval to resume the 2020 season.
The football season was expected to kick off in March this year but was suspended due to the spread of COVID-19 and was supposed to host the COSAFA under 17 championship from 22 July to 1 August which they also hosted last year.
Responding to calls from COSAFA, FAM through its competitions and communications manager Gomezgani Zakazaka said they still want to host the tournament but this will only be possible once the local league kicks off. “Plans are still there for us to host the COSAFA under 17 youth championship but this will only be possible once the local league kick-off.
Initially, this year’s tournament was to be played in July as we didn’t want to interfere with the school calendar as most of the under 17 players are school-going children. We will wait until we receive a calendar from the ministry of Education as to when they will be on holiday to incorporate it into our program,” said Zakazaka.
Football Association of Malawi plans to kick off the new season on 8 August and their calendar will include the COSAFA under 17 youth championship which will be defended by Zambia who won it last year after defeating Mozambique.
