Malawi national football team has been drawn in Group D of the 2022 Qatar FIFA world cup qualifiers against African heavyweights Ivory Coast and Cameroon at a draw held in Egypt on Tuesday.
The flames who last, played against Cameroon in 2018 in the qualifiers of the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals which were in Egypt. They will also face neighbours Mozambique with the group winners progressing to the next round of the qualifiers.
Reacting to the draw, flames coach Meke Mwase said the team needs to prepare well as it is a big challenge playing against west African teams.
“The draw has been made and it’s a big challenge ahead of us but in football everything happens. In the past, we played against these sides and managed to draw and as a youthful side, we have a lot to learn from them. On paper, they are strong sides but football goes either way once you prepare well. My appeal to the government and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) is to intensify preparations for the team to do better in the competition,” said Mwase.
The 2022 world cup qualifiers will start in November 2020.
