The Malawi National Women’s football team has defeated the Mozambique National Women’s football team by 3 goals to 0 in the second leg of the Tokyo 2020 Women’s Olympics qualifier played at the Estadio Nacional de Zimpeto on Tuesday 9th April 2019.

Knowing they are playing at home and should use home ground advantage, Mozambique wanted an early goal but the She Flames defended deep in the opening minutes as they had a 11-1 goals aggregate going into the match.

With the game approaching the half hour mark, Malawi started attacking Mozambique and this disturbed the home team as the game was much into their half but with their defence being solid it ended goalless at half time.

In the second half, the search for goals from both sides continued and it was in the 51st minute when the She Flames block the dead rock when Swedish based striker Temwa Chawinga scored before captain Tabitha Chawinga doubled the lead in the 72nd minute after beating a miscalculated offside trap by the Mamba’s defence.

Sabina Thom sealed off the victory for the She Flames when she scored with a flying header connection a Zainab Kapanda’s cross to make it 3-0 on the day and 14-1 on aggregate.

Speaking after the match Malawi Women’s National football team coach Abel Mkandawire said job done for the first round.
“We had a good game this afternoon and I thank the girls for we have managed to win the second leg and it’s job done now and we progress to the next round of the qualifiers.
“We need to go back to the drawing board and work on the few mistakes we had despite the win over Mozambique as the qualifying stages get tough with each round and we should be ready to prepare well to do better in the next round”, Mkandawire said.

The She Flames will face Kenya in the next round of the Tokyo 2020 Women’s Olympics qualifier with the first leg to be at home on the 26th August and the return leg away on 1st September 2019.
