Three Football Association of Malawi (FAM) officials are set to attend a two-day FIFA stadium safety workshop at the FIFA regional office in South Africa next week.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Club Licensing and Compliance Manager, Casper Jangale, Competitions Committee Chairman, Jabbar Alide and Security Committee member, Tiya Somba Banda will represent the country at the workshop.
FAM General Secretary, Alfred Gunda said the workshop will help the association enhance its capacity in enforcing safety and security measures to ensure a safe fan environment in local stadiums adding that the workshop will help FAM improve on areas they were lagging behind.
“The workshop is in line with the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between FIFA, CAF and the African Union regarding education, anti-corruption and safety. We believe that Malawi will benefit from the workshop and we hope to learn more from the presentations.
“The workshop will give an opportunity to FIFA and the participants to exchange ideas through structure presentations and activities. Among the instructors are the inspectors who came to Malawi in 2017 and recommended the renovation of Kamuzu Stadium,” Gunda said.
In a statement for the Federation for International Football Association (FIFA), the workshop follows a series of the stadium inspection that were undertaken by the Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA) in 14 African FIFA member association including Malawi.
“Among other things, participants at the workshop are expected to discuss the SGSA stadium inspections and lessons learnt, determining stadium safety objectives, overall principles of the safety and FIFA as well as CAF updates regarding stadium safety,” reads the statement.
The development comes as FAM has been chosen to host the FIFA infrastructure workshop under the FIFA Forward Program between May 15-16 at the Ryalls Hotel in Blantyre which will attract 26 participants from African countries and delegates from FIFA and CAF.
The main objective of the workshop is to enable FAs in Africa strategically reflect with experts in the fields of engineering, architecture and project management on developing and improving top sporting facilities.
