Blantyre based football supporters on Wednesday marched to Football Association of Malawi (FAM) offices to deliver their petition as they seek to demand the kick off of the 2020 season.
Fans have started pressurizing FAM to seek guidance from relevant authorities including the government for football games to start in the country after politicians have started having campaign rallies which are attracting large numbers of people despite the restrictions for people to gather in large numbers due to coronavirus.
Nyasa Big Bullets football club supporters general secretary Mabvuto Chibambo said they are craving for the game of football and they have hope that FAM will listen to their concerns.
“We went to FAM to give our petition as we want the game of football to kick off and they have given us assurance that the game will start soon, just that they need to consult relevant stakeholders,” said Chibambo.
Speaking after receiving the petition FAM president Walter Nyamilandu Manda said there is need to consider not putting the lives of football stakeholders at risk of coronavirus despite the supporters concerns being understandable.
“As FAM we would also want football to start but we will do it in a proper way that takes into consideration the safety of us all. We have already started looking into the possible means how we can bring back the sport as we proposed kickoff of the league in three months time until September or let the season to just resume next year,” Nyamilandu said.
The 2020 football season in the country was expected to kick off on 21st of March but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and people are looking forward to see teams battle it out in the TNM super league, FISD challenge cup, Airtel top 8 cup and the to be launched FDH Bank sponsored cup.
