Mzuni football club has announced that they have changed their name to Mzuzu warriors with immediate effect.
The club lost sponsorship from Mzuzu University just after the start of the 2019 season after the technical panel denied to go by the sponsors wish of the team to have players who are students at the institution. This also resulted in the institutions ordering the club to stop using their name.
In an interview, the club general secretary Donex Chilonga said they have decided to be called warriors as they fought a good fight in the TNM super league this year.
“As the executive committee of the club we had a meeting on Sunday and decided to change the name to Mzuzu warriors as we managed to survive relegation in the super league this year without sponsors and we will write to Super League of Malawi (SULOM) to start processing papers with the changed name,” Chilonga said.
Mzuzu University had been sponsoring the team since it’s promotion into the TNM super league in 2014 and has finished on position 12 with 32 points in the 2019 league.
