Phalombe, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Halima Daud on Thursday elevated two chiefs of Phalombe, Sub T.A. Namasoko and Group Village Head Nyambalo to Traditional Authority and Sub Traditional Authority positions respectively.
The two chiefs were earmarked for elevation during the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) reign and the current administration has fulfilled the appointments.
Speaking during the elevation event, the deputy minister said the current government has committed to honour chiefs’ work on merit, hence the need for chiefs to be vigilant in their work.
The minister said State President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera understands that chiefs are the helm of development in the communities as such, he advises them to desist from corruption and discrimination.
“The President has sent me to advise you two newly crowned chiefs to be spearheads of development in your areas and avoid engaging in frontline politics, a thing that has time and again proven to kill development,” said Daud.
In an interview, the minister said government has planned to put chiefs on health insurance as well as build houses for them so that they can live comfortable lives like everyone else.
Commenting on this, Senior Chief Nazombe who spoke on behalf of the newly crowned leaders thanked the Deputy Minister and government for fulfilling the appointments, saying they were worried that elevation of Lhomwe chiefs would stall due to change of leadership.
“It was our daily worry that perhaps the new government would ignore us after the shift of leadership, however this event proves that the current administration is not going to segregate anyone in delivering development,” said Nazomb
