The Higher Education Students’ Loans Board (HESLB) has started disbursing Sh63.7 billion food and accommodation expenses for the third quarter of the 2019/2020 academic year.
According to the minister of education Prof Joyce Ndalichako, the loan allocations will be in the bank accounts of the loan beneficiary students by May 28, 2020. It was also mentioned in the President’s speech of May 21, as he announced the resumption of the studies on June 1.
Speaking on the disbursement, HESLB executive director Abdul-Razaq Badru, the allocation is done four times in every year of study. The first disbursement was done in November last year, while the second was done in January this year.
The HESLB statement says that together with the money for food and accommodation, the board was also completing Sh59.1 billion worth of fees payments that will be disbursed to more than 70 institutions of higher learning in Tanzania.
During the 2019/20 academic year of studies, the government provided Sh450 billion for higher education loans to 132,119 beneficiaries studying at various institutions.
