The 2019/20 UEFA champions league round of 16 matches brought excitement and records as two of Europe’s top football clubs, Real Madrid and Juventus exited the tournament on Friday.
Real Madrid traveled to England to face Manchester City at the city of Manchester stadium and the 2019/20 La Liga champions had to overturn a 2-1 first leg result to progress to the quarterfinals but it was not meant to be as the citizens displayed a good tactical approach to the match that saw them winning 2-1 and progress to the next round with a 4-2 aggregate goal margin.
Manchester City scored first in the 9th minute of the match when Madrid defender Raphael Varane was caught in possession by Gabriel Jesus who passed the ball to Raheem Sterling to put the ball into the net. Just before the half hour mark, Benzema equalised for Real Madrid to give hope to the Spanish side of a possible comeback.
In the second half, Manchester City continued to pressure Real Madrid and Varane was at it again in the 68th minute when he failed to clear the ball which landed on the feet of Gabriel Jesus who made no mistake to score city’s second.
The 13 times champions league winners Real Madrid are out and Manchester City who have finished the English football season empty handed look certain to have a hand on the champions league trophy.
In another match, Italian giants Juventus defeated French side Lyon 2-1 at Juventus stadium but it was not enough to see them through to the quarterfinals of the campaign this season as they bow out on away goal rule.
Lyon came into the match holding a 1-0 first leg win and added salt to the Italian giants wounds when they took a lead in the 12th minute through a well converted spot kick by Depay after Aouar was clipped in the box by Bernardeschi.
Just before the break, Christiano Ronaldo equalised from the spot kick after Depay handled the ball in the box before completing his brace in the 60th minute with a brilliant finish from outside the box.
Despite winning the match 2-1, Juventus has failed to progress to the quarterfinals as an aggregate score tied the two at 2-2 but the French side progressed to the next round having scored a goal in Italy and become the first French side to reach the quarterfinals of the champions league since Monaco in 2016/17 season and set a record to have reached the stage for the first time.
The wins for Lyon and Manchester city dates the two a quarterfinal crush as the other pairs see Atalanta face Paris St German (PSG) while Athletic Madrid will play RB Leipzig.
