The top half of the continent is comprised of a desert, and the Sahara Desert, the world’s hottest desert, is located in Northern Africa, and at 3.5 million square miles is approximately the size of the United States or China. The Nile River, which runs through 11 different countries in Africa, is the longest in the world, over 4,000 miles long.

  1. The national flag of Mozambique has the image of an AK-47 assault rifle embedded into it. It is one of only two national flags of UN member states to feature a firearm. The other is Guatemala.
  2. Africa has the largest remaining populations of lion, elephant, rhinoceros, cheetah, hyena, leopard and hundreds of other species
