The world’s second-largest and second-most-populous continent is located on the African continental plate. The “Dark Continent” is divided roughly into two parts by the equator and surrounded by sea except where the Isthmus of Suez joins it to Asia.
- Largest City: Lagos in Nigeria. With more than 21 million inhabitants, Lagos is also one of the six biggest metropolitan cities in the world.
2. Smallest Country: Seychelles, which is an archipelago (nation of islands) in the Indian Ocean. On the African mainland, the smallest country is the Gambia.
3. Biggest Island: Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world (after Greenland, New Guinea and Borneo).
