Man jailed for 15 years for subjecting his three daughters to FGM

Cosmas Chacha (45), a Kivule resident in Dar es Salaam has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for subjecting his three daughters to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

The Kisutu Resident Magistrate Court has ordered the accused to pay a fine of Tsh 3M for the three offences that caused unbearable pain to the young girls.

According to the Resident Magistrate Rashid Chaungu, the man was found guilty from the evidence that was presented to the court. He added that the accused wife had died and the children are being taken care of at SOS Children’s village in Sinza, Dar es Salaam.

Therefore, Chacha wrote a letter to the Social Welfare Office seeking permission to take the young daughters to their grandmother in Tarime Mara region, promising to protect them while there.

Against his promises, the accused took the children to his home at Kivule village in Dar es Salaam where the FGM was conducted on them despite being outlawed in the country.
