A 30-year-old man, Imran Adam is in police custody in Mangochi on suspicion that he killed fellow fisherman, Mwanyuli Wyson, over a fishing ground at Limbimbi River in Traditional Authority Chimwala.
Mangochi Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Sub-Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi confirmed the incident on Tuesday, saying Wyson met his fate on Sunday when he tried to stop a fight between his brother and Adam who had picked a quarrel over fishing ground.
Daudi alleged that Adam, 33, kicked Wyson and the latter fell into the river where he drowned and died of suffocation.
“When Wyson fell into the river, Adam followed him there and kept Wayson’s body under water, drowning and suffocating him to unconsciousness,” explained Daudi.
Wyson was later rushed to Nandumbo Health Centre where he was pronounced dead upon arrival and post-mortem results revealed that death was due to suffocation.
Adam will appear before court to answer the charge of murder when investigations are complete on the case, according to Daudi.
Imran Adam hails from Chisawa Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chimwala in Mangochi.
