Neno, Government has elevated Mikayere John from group village headman Chikalema to sub-Traditional Authority in Neno District.
Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Halima Daudi presided over the elevation ceremony on Friday at a function held at Chiwale Secondary School Hall in the district.
Daudi said government is committed to promoting chiefs welfare and restore the authority and honor they once had as preached by the state president, Dr Lazarus Chakwera.
“Chiefs have more duties and responsibilities in their communities even for the government to bring development to the village it goes through the chiefs which is why today we are promoting the chiefs to facilitate this.
“This government is focused on reaching out to everyone irrespective of their political affiliations and an effective and starting point is through local leaders,” she said.
The minister went on to say that government will continue to look into the welfare of local leaders by among other things raising their honoria, building houses and establishing free medical aid for chiefs.
She then advised the newly elected chief to desist from corrupt practices and ensure that women and other vulnerable groups are treated fairly with his decisions.
Sub-Traditional Authority Chikalema said he was grateful for the promotion and will heed the minister’s advise promising to work hand in hand with his fellow chiefs, the government and all stakeholders in promoting development.
