Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) plans to equip Covid-19 treatment and care emergency treatment units in Mzimba and Mangochi districts.
This was disclosed Saturday by MRCS Response and Recovery Specialist, Chisomo Teputepu at Mzimba Boma during stakeholders meeting on the renovation of a Covid-19 treatment centre at Mzimba District Hospital.
He said the initiative would be implemented under the organization’s Covid-19 Prevention, Preparedness and Response Project.
The renovation works are being funded by Agricultural Transformation Initiatives (ATI).
Teputepu said MRCS would provide the treatment centres with tents and medical equipment once renovation works are completed.
“We have the mandate to assist vulnerable people and in this current scenario, Covid-19 patients are regarded as vulnerable as well and we will implement this project in Mzimba and Mangochi districts as they are deemed to be at high risk of the pandemic,” he said.
Teputepu added that “We want to improve quality and capacity of health services in of support Covid-19 prevention and control activities in these districts.”
M’mbelwa District Council Chairperson, Dan Nkosi commended MRCS for the project, especially that the district is registering a high number of returnees from South Africa.
“Looking at high numbers of returnees from South Africa is from Mzimba the renovation of the building will assist a lot to treat COVID-19 patients,” he said.
