The Malawi national football team interim coach Meke Mwase has hinted on the idea of taking the under 23 national team to this year’s Confederation of Southern African Football Association (COSAFA) tournament which will start on 25th May to 8 June in Durban South Africa.
Mwase who lead the senior team to the 2020 Champions of African Nations (CHAN)but unfortunately exiting after losing to Eswatini 1-0 at home on Saturday, said it would be wise and proper to give a chance to the jnr Flames to participate at the tournament as one way of building a strong future national team.
Meke Mwase who also coached the jnr Flames in the qualifies of the 2020 Olympics and were booted out in the hands of Zambia said he assembled a good squad full of talent and potential and leant a lot when they went to Belgium for camping a head of the Zambia game.
“We are yet to release the squad which we are to take to this year’s COSAFA tournament but it would be a good decision if we use the under 23 team which played in the qualifies of the Olympics as it has a lot of talent and potential that if we can keep the boys together we can build a strong future national team from them and the time we had our camping in Belgium we learnt a lot that has improved play of the boys,”
“Yes a number of the boys that were part of the jnr Flames have played in the CHAN qualifier games and did not disappoint in terms of performance on the ground that’s why we are considering of using the COSAFA tournament to give exposure to the boys and that they be gaining experience “, Mwase said.
Mwase further said that he is also considering of including professional players from Mozambique and South Africa to guild the young stars at the tournament.
“Our friends in Mozambique and South Africa are done with their league and we are talking to a few players and their clubs to see if they can be released to join us at the tournament and be part of the team since the tournament does not fall on FIFA calendar dates and clubs resist to release players .
“We would love to have Mozambique based midfielder Christopher John Banda and strikers Chawanangwa Kawonga and Richard Mbulu as well as South African midfielder Gerald Phiri jnr so that they add strength to the squad “, said Mwase.
The Flames is expected to go into camp on Sunday to start preparations for the COSAFA tournament which will kick off on 25th May in South Africa but the Flames will start the campaign a day later against Seychelles in group B .
