Netball is the most popular women’s sport in Malawi. With the word Chichewa for the game being “Nchembre mbaye’, where Nchembre means “mother”.
Netball in Malawi comprises of a National team, under-21 and almost 7 club teams. The Malawi National netball team are called the Queens. The Queens won the African Cup of netball champions. In 2012, the national team participated in the Fast5 World Series and in 2016 the Women’s National team were ranked sixth in the INF (International Netball Federation) internationally.
The Women’s team notable players are Connie Mhone, Mary Waya and Mwayi Kumwenda.
Mwayi Kumwenda was the first to play in senior international netball at the 2010 World Netball Series. She played in the 2011 Netball World Championship and in the same year, she played in the World Netball Series where during a game against Australia, she and Mary Waya scored three consecutive four pointers in the last quarter to snatch a historic draw.
Mary Waya is a Malawian netball player and coach. In domestic netball, Waya plays for the MTL Queens . In 2012, she was named as the coach for the Tanzania National Netball Team.

In the year 1992, the ADMARC Tigresses won the Southern African Netball Association Trophy. In the same year, a Malawian player was awarded as the best player in the tournament.
In 2017, Civonets became the first team in the central region to lift the National Cup after they won GOVT NETBALL CHALLENGE.
The Women’s team is made up of young Malawians and the government of Malawi including UNICEF have supported and provided the team with funding for construction of various netball facilities.
