The Girls Empowerment Network (GENET) has advised girls to embrace high self-esteem in order for them to achieve their different goals and remain independent in the future.
The Girls were advised Thursday during a two-day girls’ Advisory Board Conference held at St John’s in Lilongwe under GENET three projects namely; Happy Health and Safe, Improving Secondary Education in Malawi (ISEM) and Improving Girls Access to SRH Services and Information.
The conference was held with support from; Southern African Aids Trust (SAT), Edukans and Amplify Change and was patronized by 75 school girls from 11 districts including; Dowa, Mchinji, Karonga, Thyolo, Mangoch, Mzuzu and Blantyre.
GENET Project Officer, Taonga Phiri said that her organisation decided to hold the forum in order to groom the girls with different skills.
“As an organisation we have the spirit to impart girls with diverse skills and these include leadership skills, for this reason we thought it wise to bring the girls together in order to sharpen their skills,” she explained.
Phiri added that the conference was scheduled as one way of providing a platform for girls to share and discuss issues that affect their daily lives which include issues of Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and forced marriages.
The Project Officer is optimistic that through the conference, girls would play an active role in transforming their communities by being agents of positive change.
“I am confident that, the skills which the girls have gained during the conference will enable them to be young leaders and advocates in their societies as well as at school,” she said.
Mikombe Community Day Secondary School, form 2 student who patronised the conference, Princess Semu said that she was motivated by the forum and she said that she would be able to cope up with the challenges that affect her education as well as her entire human rights.
