The Malawi women’s national football team has been booted out of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic qualifiers after losing 3-0 to Kenya.
In a match played behind closed doors at Machakos stadium in Nairobi, the home side did not disappoint. Cynthia Silwatso scored in the 19th minute for the Harambe Starlets to lead at the break.
In the second half, efforts from the She Flames lead by Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga were not enough to rescue their hopes of progressing to the next round.
Mwanalima Adam made it two for the home side in the 77th minute before completing her brace ten minutes later.
After the match, She Flames coach Abel Mkandawire said her defence was not composed on the day.
“We played well but our defence made mistakes which Kenya utilised and scored goals. It was our wish to progress to the next round but it happens in football”, he said.
Kenya has progressed to the next round with a 5-3 aggregate score as Malawi won the first leg 3-2. The Harambe Starlets will face Ghana in the third round of the qualifiers.
