National Youth Football Association (NYFA) has expressed worries that the 2020 season might not kick after receiving communication from their sponsors First Capital Bank (FCB) who sponsor the under 20 league.
General secretary for national youth football association, Thokozani Chimbali confirmed receiving the communication from FCB who among other reasons say their plans have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic which has slowed down their planning.
“We have received official communication from our sponsors saying the 2020 season should be cancelled. We need to sit down as National Youth Committee and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to map the way forward as they have been sponsoring the league for a long time and this has happened because of the pandemic and if the season starts it will go up to 2021 which will not be in line with our planning and budget” said Chimbali.
First Capital Bank started sponsoring the under 20 league in 2009 with K4 million and was played in only three districts but has tremendously grown to a sponsorship of K35 million played in 12 districts including Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mangochi, Dedza, Kasungu and Mulanje.
Over the years, NYFA through the under 20 league has produced a number of talented players including Peter Banda who won the player of the 2019 TNM player of the season award with defending champions Nyasa Big Bullets and also features for the Malawi national football team.
