2000 –  In Congo an immediate pullout from Kisangani of forces from Rwanda and Uganda was agreed to in a bid to avert a wider war.

2003 –  In northeastern Congo rival tribes fighting signed a cease-fire.

2006 – The UN mission Congo said Innocent Kaina, one of the founding members of a militia group in northeastern Congo, has been wounded and captured in fighting with the Congolese army.

2007 – The UN Security Council voted unanimously to extend its peacekeeping mission in Congo until the end of the year while calling for a timetable to gradually withdraw the nearly 18,000-member force.

THE WORLD

1868 – President Andrew Johnson is acquitted during Senate impeachment, by one vote, cast by Edmund G. Ross.

1960 –  A Big Four summit in Paris collapses because of the American U-2 spy plane affair.

1963 – After 22 Earth orbits, Gordon Cooper returns to Earth, ending the last mission of Project Mercury.
