AFRICA

( MALAWI)

2010 – in Malawi a gay couple, arrested after throwing a party to celebrate their engagement in this conservative southern African country, were convicted of unnatural acts and gross indecency. On May 20 a judge sentenced the couple to the maximum 14 years in prison with hard labor under Malawi’s anti-gay legislation. On May 29 President Bingu wa Mutharika announced a pardon and ordered their release.

2003 –  In northeastern Congo the savagely killed bodies of 2 UN military observers were found after having been reported missing for several days.

2005 – A UN report said Rwandan Hutu rebels operating in eastern Congo have killed, raped, or kidnapped more than 900 civilians over the past year.

THE WORLD

1931 – Japanese pilot Seiji Yoshihara crashes his plane in the Pacific Ocean while trying to be the first to cross the ocean nonstop. He is picked up seven hours later by a passing ship

1980 –After rumbling for two months, Mount Saint Helens, in Washington, erupts 3 times in 24 hours.

1974 – India becomes the sixth nation to explode an atomic bomb.
