AFRICA – [DRC]

2004 – Azarias Ruberwa, prominent Tutsi and one of Congo’s 4 vice-presidents, announced that he and his party (RCD-Goma) were walking out of the transitional government.

1998 –  In Congo rebels appeared to have seized Kisangani while government soldiers recaptured Kitona, a military base near the coast. Troops from Zimbabwe fought rebels advancing on Kinshasa. The capture of Kisangani effectively splitting Congo and cut off commerce with government-held territory and Kinshasa, the capital 900 miles downriver.

1985 – South African attorney/UDF leader “”Dulah”” Omar arrested”

2011 – Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi is overthrown after National Transitional Council forces take control of Bab al-Azizia compound during the 2011 Libyan Civil War. 

2011 – A 5.8 earthquake centered at Mineral, Virginia, damages the Washington Monument, forcing the landmark to close for repairs.
