Party Chairman and co found guilty, to serve five months in prison or pay fine


The Chadema Chairman, Freeman Mbowe and eight other politicians were found guilty, by the Dar es Salaam court today Monday, 10 March.

The politicians were all charged with conspiracy to commit offences, unlawful assembly, rioting after proclamation, inciting commission of offences, raising discontent and ill-will for unlawful purposes, and sedition. They committed the offences between February 1 and 16, 2018 in the Capital.

They were sentenced to five months in prison or pay a Sh 30 million fine each. Halima Mdee, Ester Bulaya, Peter Msigwa and John Heche are all required to pay Sh 40 million whereas Freeman Mbowe has been fined Sh70 million.

Former party Secretary-General Vincent Mashinji Salum Mwalimu, Ester Matiko and John Manyika were found guilty of counts 2, 3 and 4 hence required to pay 30 million each. Resident Magistrate Thomas Simba found that prosecution had proved beyond a reasonable doubt in 9 counts out of 13, which were counts 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 but their case failed to prove their case in counts 1, 2, 3 an 4.
