Tigers football club has suffered a big blow after seasonal coach Gerald Phiri senior announced his resignation as the teams head coach.
The former Malawi national football team assistant coach said he has made the decision as the Kanjedza based side is in deep financial problems making it difficult to put the welfare of it’s players at heart.
“I have decided to part ways with the club as it’s going through financial problems making it difficult to consider the welfare of the players who need to be motivated for the team to perform better. With how the situation is at the club, I am concerned the team will perform poorly in the end people will point fingers at me as the head coach,” said Phiri snr.
Phiri made a return to Tigers at the start of the 2019 season and led the side to finish on 9th position in the TNM super league with 38 points.
In a related development, Ekwendeni Hammers which was promoted to play in the TNM super league this year after being champions of the Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) league in 2019 have employed Edison Kadenge Mwafulirwa as coach ahead of the 2020 season.
Mwafulirwa was assistant coach at Mzuzu warriors (formerly Mzuni) and has signed a two years contract, confirmed by Mabuchi Mkandawire.
“I can confirm that Mr Mwafulirwa will be our head coach as he is equally good since he’s been in the super league for a number of years”, Mabuchi said.
Mwafulirwa said he has accepted to take the challenge with the club.
“We have agreed that I take charge of the team as they start their journey in top flight league. It might look like a small team on paper but with time it can grow as any other team in the country,” he said.
