Lilongwe National Taskforce on the Re-opening of Schools, Colleges and Universities has recommended that schools should open on July 13, 2020.
In a statement released on June 2, 2020, by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology said the Taskforce has given its recommendation to the Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19.
“It was worth pointing that the re-opening of Schools, Colleges and Universities amidst Covid-19 pandemic that led to the loss of four lives in the country was an attempt to ensure a proper balance between the right to education and right to life,” the statement reads.
It further said it was for this reason that the Taskforce at its inception meeting on May 22, 2020, resolved to consult various stakeholders to come up with a common position that ensures a safe return to learning.
“The Schools will be re-opened with specific details and conditions which the tacks force will announce after the finalisation of the consultations,” the statement added.
Further, the consultations to various stakeholders have already started and additionally, consultations on a memorandum of understanding have been dispatched to various learning institutions and other sectors for their views on the safe reopening their various contents.
The Taskforce said it was working in a systematic and fact-based way to ensure all its decision making was informed by the best public health data and global best practices that ensure safe re-opening.
