The Malawi national women’s football team defeated Kenya 3-2 in the first leg of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic qualifies on Wednesday at the Kamuzu stadium.
The She Flames opened their goals account in the 15th minute through a Madina Nguluwe free kick before Cynthia Silwatso leveled for the visitors.
Lead by captain Tabitha Chawinga who missed the team’s action at this years cosafa tournament, the She Flames attacked the visitors from all angles. In the 35th minute Tabitha Chawinga put the home side in the lead before completing her brace four minutes from a penalty.
In the second half, the home side failed to play their normal game as they looked tired.
In the 81st minute Cynthia Silwatso reduced the deficite for the visitors but that was not enough to rescued her side.
After the match She Flames coach Abeal Mkandawire said.
“Am happy we have won as nobody gave us a chance to win over Kenya. We had a game plan which worked and am hopeful we will win again away in Kenya”.
The two sides will meet again on 1st September with the winner progressing to the next round to face either Ghana or Gabon.
