A last-minute goal from substitute Martins Obafemi was enough to rescue a point for Southampton and break the hearts of Manchester United who had hopes of climbing to the third position of the standings if they had won the match on Tuesday at Old Trafford.
United went into the match as favourites to collect maximum points having won their previous 5 matches but it was not meant to be as the visitors took an early lead in the 12th minute through a strike.
The home side quickly responded with two goals in a space of three minutes just before the half-hour mark from Marcus Rashford and Antonia Martial which saw them leading until half time.
In the second half, both sides failed to score despite creating a number of chances until in the extra time of the match when Obafemi headed home a corner kick for the match to end 2-2 to the disappointment of Manchester United.
With the draw, Manchester United is still on 5th position on the standings with 59 points as they failed to take advantage of Chelsea and Leicester City who lost their games over the weekend and are both fighting for a top-four finish in the English Premier League (EPL).
The saints are on position 12 with 45 points.
