Malawi national women’s football team captain Tabitha Chawinga was all smiles as she won the women’s sports personality and the overall sports personality for 2019 during the third edition of the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) awards gala held at the Bingu International Convention Center on Friday.
Chawinga helped her Chinese club Jiangsu Suning win the Chinese women’s super league, Renault super cup and also won the golden boot. She also helped the Malawi women’s national football team reach the second round of the 2020 Olympic qualifies in 2019 and her fine form saw her nominated for the confederation of Africa (CAF) women’s player of the year in 2019.
Speaking after receiving the awards the former DD Sunshine women’s football team striker said she was happy for the recognition.
“I feel honoured receiving these awards and they will motivate me to work extra hard and represent my country everywhere I go,” Chawinga said.p
Malawi national football team striker Gabadinho Mhango who was nominated for the sportsman of the year award, received less votes against athlete Noel Stern Lifa who won the award.
FIFA referee Bernadetta Kwimbira Mzika who officiated at the 2019 FIFA women’s world cup was voted best judge of the year completing the awards won by football athletes at the gala award.
