Tanzania police hold fake informers on coronavirus

The Dar es Salaam special zone Commander Lazaro Mombasasa has confirmed that he is holding a couple over spreading fake news about coronavirus disease.

Speaking in a press conference, Mombasasa said the two are husband and wife who allegedly committed the offense on March 20 while using public transport from Tabata to Muhimbili Hospital in Dar es Salaam.

The two suspects were named as Boniface Elias Mwita 29, and Rosemary Elias Mwita 41, residents from Tabata.  The two, according to Mambosasa, claimed that the government had run short of funds to feed the students in schools and chose to take advantage of the pandemic outbreak.

“They also claimed the government had no money and looked for funds from the developed countries. The other passengers had listened to their claims and asked the driver to take the vehicle to the Police station,” Mombasasa disclosed.

Further investigations into the case are underway thereafter the suspects will be charged. Authorities have urged the public to desist spreading false information regarding the disease that has claimed thousands of people globally.
