Ntcheu, Authorities in Ntcheu have asked the government to consider constructing a by-pass road in an effort to minimize road accidents along the M1 road that are claiming the lives of people in the district.

The Call comes after the District registered another fatal accident at Ntcheu Boma that claimed two lives and left others with various degrees of injuries on Friday when a Freightliner Truck hit a minibus Vannete along Dedza-Ntcheu M1 road.

Speaking on Saturday after Officials from Department of Disaster and Management Affairs (DODMA) comforted the bereaved families and cheered the casualties at Ntcheu District Hospital; Senior Chief Kwataine said it was worrisome that the M1 road in Ntcheu had turned into a death trap.

He observed that a by-pass road could ease pressure along the M1 road and help minimize accidents in the district.

“We lost lives on this M1 road and around the same area, last month. We are tired of losing innocent, strong and energetic people that could contribute to the development of the country,” Kwataine pointed out.

Chairperson of Ntcheu District Council, Councillor, Kunimba Mambo said the government should consider the request in order to solve the current situation.

He said the extent of road accidents in the district has reached an alarming rate that needs an urgent reaction from the government.

Principal Secretary (PS) for Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), Elvis Thodi said his department would realize with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure as well as the Department of Roads Authority to map the way forward.

“It was worrisome to see the extent of fatal road accidents that are occurring in Ntcheu and it needs urgent action. We are going to sit down with all the to map the way forward and we are going to react to the situation as soon as possible,” he assured.
