1994 – Malawi-born Australian swimmer (born on this day) who represented her country at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She won three gold medals at the 2015 World Championships, a year after winning gold at the Pan Pacific Championship and Commonwealth Games.

2002 – An uprising in Kisangani, Congo, left 163 people dead. Three top commanders: Barnard Biamungu, commander of the RCD’s fifth brigade; Laurent Nkunda, seventh brigade commander; and Gabriel Amisi, assistant chief of staff for logistics were identified as part of the Rally for Democracy, the Rwandan-backed rebel group responsible for the massacre.
