AFRICA – [MALAWI]

2010 –  In Malawi, a gay couple, arrested after throwing a party to celebrate their engagement in this conservative southern African country, were convicted of unnatural acts and gross indecency. On May 20 a judge sentenced the couple to the maximum 14 years in prison with hard labour under Malawi’s anti-gay legislation. On May 29 President Bingu wa Mutharika announced a pardon and ordered their release.

2003 – In northeastern Congo, the savagely killed bodies of 2 UN military observers were found after having been reported missing for several days.

2005 –   A UN report said Rwandan Hutu rebels operating in eastern Congo have killed, raped, or kidnapped more than 900 civilians over the past year.
