1992 – Cate Campbell was born in Malawi. She was a member of the 4×100 relay team that won a gold medal for Australia at the 2012 Olympics. At the 2013 Australian Swimming Championships, she won gold in both the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events.
2004 – Malawi saw its very first transition between democratically elected presidents when the UDF’s presidential candidate Bingu wa Mutharika defeated MCP candidate John Tembo and Gwanda Chakuamba, who was backed by a grouping of opposition parties.

2004 – Voters in Malawi, one of the world’s poorest nations, flocked to the polls for their third multiparty elections in a decade. Bingu wa Mutharika, Pres. Muluzi’s handpicked successor was declared the winner. The ruling party lost its parliamentary majority.
1994 – In 1994, the UDF candidate Bakili Muluzi came to power in Malawi. In the general election held on 20 May 2004, the UDF’s candidate for president, Bingu wa Mutharika, won 35.9% of the vote and was elected. The party also won 49 out of 194 seats.
