AFRICA – [MALAWI]

2013 – Former foreign minister Peter Mutharika, the brother of late President Bingu wa Mutharika, is charged with treason for allegedly trying to prevent Joyce Banda from succeeding on President Mutharika’s death in 2012; the charges are later dropped when Mutharika becomes president.

1944 – Jack Mapanje, born 25th of March 1944 is a Malawian writer and poet. He was the head of English at the Chancellor College, the main campus of the University of Malawi before being imprisoned in 1987 for his collection Of Chameleons and Gods, which indirectly criticized the administration of President Hastings Banda. He was released in 1991 and emigrated to the UK, where he worked as a teacher.

1965 – Martin Luther King Jr. led 25,000 to state capitol in Montgomery, Alabama
