2007 – Malawi’s vice President pleaded innocent to the charges of treason and conspiring to murder the president at the start of his trial

1965 –  West Germany ceased military aid to Tanzania.

2002 –  In Congo peace talks were suspended a day after the opening ceremony due to wrangling over which political parties would be allowed to participate.

2007 – The World Vision humanitarian group said that more than 50% of children in refugee camps around Africa’s volatile Great Lakes area have experienced some form of sexual abuse. The data, collected in camps in the Burundi, Congo (DRC), Tanzania, northern Uganda and Rwanda, said widespread poverty made children vulnerable to abuses.

1852 – British troopship Birkenhead sinks off South Africa, 458 dies, 193 survive

1863 – Abraham Lincoln signs National Currency Act, establishes single national US Currency
