AFRICA – [MALAWI]

2011 – On the 27th of July 2011 violence erupted, President Mutharika was seen by some as increasingly autocratic and dismissive of human rights. The protests were over high costs of living, devolving foreign relations, poor governance and a lack of foreign exchange reserves. The protests left 18 people dead and at least 44 others suffering from gunshot wounds. 

2006 – Malawi’s former President Bakili Muluzi was arrested on corruption charges related to millions of dollars in donor funds that allegedly ended up in his personal account. He was released on bail after being questioned. Muluzi faced 42 counts of theft, corruption and breach of trust

AFRICA – [DRC]

2004 – The U.N. Security Council extended an arms embargo on Congo for a year as fighting continued between rival factions.

2006 – Congo 3 policemen and a civilian were killed in clashes outside a stadium where 40,000 supporters greeted Vice-President Jean-Pierre Bemba, a rebel leader turned presidential candidate.
