Three giants out of weekend TNM Super League fixture

Giants Civil Sporting, Silver Strikers and Nyasa Big Bullets will miss TNM Super League action this weekend as they have contributed more than three players to the national team.

The Malawi National Football team will host e-Swatini at the Kamuzu Stadium on May 11, 2019 in the return match for the Ethiopia 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) Southern Zonal Qualifiers.

The standard is that clubs that contribute more than three players to the national team are exempted from playing Super League matches.

Bullets and Silver Strikers have contributed 10 and four players respectively to the Flames camp which regrouped on Sunday at Mpira Village in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre ahead of the Saturday’s game with e-Swatini.

Bullets contributed John Lanjesi, Rabson Chienda, Gomezgani Chirwa, Yamikani Fodya, Charles Petro, Mike Mkwate, Chimwemwe Idana, Chiukepo Msowoya, Ernest Kakhobwe and Hassan Kajoke while Silver Strikers have Charles Thom, Trevor Kalema, Khuda Muyaba and Duncan Nyoni.

Super League of Malawi General Secretary, Williams Banda confirmed the development in an interview with Malawi News Agency on Thursday that changes have been made to the original TNM Super League fixture for this weekend.

“There are changes that have been effected due to the national team engagement. There are some teams that have contributed more than three players, so per our regulation, they are supposed to be exempted.

“However, we did not have the final names of players so after our consultations with Football Association of Malawi, they have now confirmed the fixture for the weekend based on the number of players contributed to the national team,” Banda said.

Currently, the three are in-form teams in the league as Civil Sporting lie second on the log table with 9 points having won all the three 3 games played in the league whereas Bullets sit on the third position with 7 points having won 2 games and dropped two points.

In a letter addressed to SULOM on May 8, 2019 signed by Silver Strikers General Secretary, Lawrence Yobe, the team has four players in the Flames camp including the coach Lovemore Fazili, hence the difficulty for them to fulfill the fixtures.

“The players in the Flames camp are the backbone of Silver Strikers and we will not be able to play with Masters Security as it was earlier indicated by SULOM. For the sake of fair play, we thank SULOM for accepting our request,” Yobe said.

In the revised fixture, on Saturday Chitipa United will host Ntopwa at Karonga Stadium while Blue Eagles will play host to Kamuzu Barracks at the Nankhaka Stadium. Mighty Tigers will travel to the central to meet Mlatho Mponela at Civo Stadium.

On Sunday, two matches have been lined up; Karonga United will play against Ntopwa at Karonga Stadium whereas TN Stars will lock horns with Mighty Tigers at Kasungu Stadium
