Mzuzu University (MZUNI) Council has ordered MZUNI Football Club to stop using the School’s name in the 2019 season as the institution stopped sponsoring the Club.
Speaking in an interview Mzuzu University registrar James Kwilimbe said by the club continuing to use the institutions name it implicates with the University’s brand.
“The University is no longer sponsoring the team and why should they continue using the name MZUNI? This is unacceptable as we are aware it can have implications in the future and affect the university’s brand.
“In addition people can also have the perception that we are still sponsoring the team. We have therefore instructed the officials of the team to effect the change of the name by the end of the week”, Kwilimbe said.
Commenting on the matter, MZUNI Football Club Chairperson Albert Mtungambera Harawa said they know they need to change the name after the University withdrew sponsorship but it can not be done in a hasty way.
“We are not in a position to continue using the name MZUNI Football Club but we need time to change all that is needed because at the moment we are communicating that the institution stopped funding us as we already submitted documents bearing the school’s name to Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and Super League of Malawi (SULOM) “, Harawa said.
Mzuzu University Council stopped sponsoring the team after disagreements with the team’s technical panel and executive committee over the decision that the team should use players that are students at the institution in the 2019 season a decision that did not please the later.
The University which had been sponsoring MZUNI Football Club since 2015 when it was promoted from the Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) League withdrew it’s sponsorship say the school does not have money to fund the team.
