VAR frustrate Liverpool in Mercyside derby, Chelsea & Southampton share points

The 2020/21 English premier league (EPL) season returned on Saturday after the international break and action on the day saw encounters between teams as they hunt for maximum points.

In one of the mouth watering fixtures on the day, Everton invited the defending champions Liverpool at the Goodson park in the so called Mercyside derby which lived to its billing when a four goals thriller saw the two sides sharing points for Everton to still remain unbeaten this season after playing 5 games.

Liverpool went into the match having lost 7-2 against Aston Villa in their last premier league match and went head on to face Everton which had won all their previous 4 games and just in the first 3 minutes of the match it already showed its intensity as the visitors took the lead through Senegalese international Sadio Mane.

Michael Keane leveled for the home side just before the break in a half Egyptian international Mohamed Salah was wasteful as he lacked power behind his shots trying to beat Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

In the second half, Liverpool took the lead through a volley from Salah and with nine minutes remaining on the clock, Dominic-Calvert Lewin was the hero for Everton as his header rescued a point before Liverpool captain John Henderson scored a goal which was not allowed for an offside by VAR.

Everton remain unbeaten in the 2020/21 season after 5 games as they have won 4 games and drew one and have 13 points on the summit of the log table.

At the Stamford bridge, a first half brace from Timo Werner was not enough for Chelsea to defeat Southampton as it ended 3-3 for the two sides to share points.

Werner opened his English premier league account in the 15th minute after receiving a good ball from Ben Chilwell before doubling the lead for the home side 13 minutes later but Southampton pulled one back through Ings just before half time.

With 12 minutes into the second half, the visitors equalized power through Adams but the Blues were in the lead again 2 minutes later when Timo Werner set Kai Harvertz who made no mistake.

Vestergaard turned out to be an important player for the visitors on the afternoon when he equalized in added minutes of the match when Ward-Prowse free kick was flicked by Theo Walcott for Vestergaard to put the ball into the net and grab a point for Southampton.

In another match at the city of Manchester stadium, a lone goal from Raheem Sterling proved decisive as Manchester City defeated Arsenal 1-0 to collect three points and move to 10th position with 7 points from 4 games.
